Changing climatic conditions as well as human activities such as agricultural intensification lead to changing land cover patterns like deforestation, desertification but also regeneration or reforestation. To better understand the impact of climate change on land cover and the social –ecological system, students are trained in the use of state-of-the-art modeling tools for the analysis of environmental and socio-economic datasets. They produce quantitative results for scenario development and the assessment of the impacts of climate change on land cover and the environment with the aim of proffering the most suitable adaptation measures to minimize these impacts.
At the end of the two year program, the graduates of the MRP in Climate Change and Adapted Land Use are expected to:
Central to the program is a sound training in quantitative methods for climate change and land use analysis and assessment. During the two-years program, students complete practical and theoretical courses on remote sensing, Geographic Information System (GIS), geo-statistics, research methodology, land use dynamics as well as regional climate modeling. Students have the option for further specialization in the fields of agriculture, land management, economic resources, water resources and climate systems.
The Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUT Minna) is a Federal Government owned University in Nigeria. It was established in 1983 and specializes in Sciences, Engineering and especially Technology. In 2003 FUT Minna established its Centre for Climate Change and Freshwater Resources (CCCFR). The CCCFR has concluded important projects such as the production of a National Agro-Climatic Atlas to be used for combating effects of climate change-induced natural disaster in Nigeria. The center collaborates with University of Cape Town, South Africa and with several United Nations Agencies like UNFCCC, WMO, UNEP, UNDP, FAO, UNESCO etc. In 2010, FUT Minna total students enrolments were over 14,000 with academic staff strength of 698.
