Soil Carbon, Fertility, Degradation

Soils play a crucial role in agricultural and natural systems for they provide the fundamental background for plant production and ecosystem services. The maintenance of soil quality is therefore crucial to food security, especially under the marginal conditions for agricultural production in West Africa. However, soil quality is severely affected by climate and land use change. This work package therefore aims at assessing the impact of the latter processes on four parameters of soil quality, i.e. on (i) soil erosion, (ii) soil fertility, (iii) soil respiration and (iv) soil organic carbon. This will allow developing recommendations concerning sustainable land use and land management.

Team

Four research groups collaborate within this workpackage:

  • Prof. Amelung (University of Bonn, Institute of Crop Science and Resource Conservation) and his team focus on the dynamics of soil organic carbon.
  • Prof. Becker (University of Bonn, Institute of Crop Science and Resource Conservation) and his team investigate the nutritional status of soils.
  • Prof. Diekkrüger (University of Bonn, Department of Geography) and his team deal with soil erosion.
  • Dr. Fürst (University of Bonn, Center for Development Research) and her team examine soil respiration.
